Community Attitudes to Transport in Sydney

Sydneysiders consistently cite congestion and transport problems as key issues impacting on Sydney's traditional position as a 'livable city'.

In a recent survey (PDF 411kb), 70% of Sydneysiders said that we need better public transport even if funding for new infrastructure and improved existing transit systems was at the expense of the road budget. Politicians often claim that they build roads because that is what the population wants, but this result shows conclusively that Sydneysiders want long-term solutions to transport issues.

For the past six years air pollution has consistently rated as the issue of highest concern when NSW residents are asked to nominate environmental issues of concern.

As motor vehicles are the major contributor of air pollution in the Greater Metropolitan Region (80% of nitrous oxides and 90% of carbon dioxide), any solution to air pollution requires a rethinking of how we are providing transport systems.
